Waddll, formerly Repre sentative from this district, who is now a rcsideot of Charlotte, arrived here ycJtcrday morning in response to an in rltatiouto speak here last night. It had been arranged to have a torchlight procction on the occasion, which was faithfully carried out, in accordance with tho programme published in the RF.nrrw yesterday morning, i The oc casion was one of unusual interest. The procession was a lengthy one and it was grated with a display of fire- works; a squad of young men. march- iuzinfnnU also made tho way hi minous with the discharge of Roman candles as tho proccst-ion moved through tho streets. ' AT THE MARKET HOUSH. The building was fairly packed by the dense throng in attendance, and, the gallery was-graced by tho presence of many of Wilmingtou's lively daugh ters. Among tho men wo uoticed quite a number whoso silvered loclcs and fur rowed checks betokened the downhill of life, but tho larger portion were of the young and rising generation, to whom the presence ol sojiiiany older heads seemed to be giving encourage ment and advice by example. After the audience had become com. posed aud quiet restored,' Mr.( J. C. Davis, a young and promising lawyer ot this city, roo aud stated ithat it would havo been -his pleasant duty to have introduced Hon. Mr. Shackelford! had not sickness prevented that gentle man's presence, but tint the Democracy of Wilmington would be addressed by one who needed no introduction. Col. Waddell then , roso and was greeted with rouuds of applause which continued for eevcral minutes. After silence and order had been, resumed tho speaker, by way of preface, express ed in very impressive language, his gratitodo to the people of j Wilmington for -such manifestations of regard and esteem for him. Ho then said that being a candidate for no office, ho proposed to confine himself to no beaten track, but to discuss such matters as seemed of the greatest interest and Im portance to tho welfare, prosperity and peace of tho people of Xorth Carolina. 11c dwelt briefly upon tho political history of tho State since the days of reconstruction; painted in vivid colors the outrages committed by the Repub lican party while in power, and making them look more frightful and hideous by a graphic comparison of its crimes with the blef sings of peace and prosper ity which have followed under Demo cratic rule. Ho spoke of the tariff as a rrcai economic oucstion upon which I tho wisest mm in oacli partv differed. and he prohibition question as a great moral problem which ought to havo no J political significance whatever. Thai j thcrej were good men, both in the Dcmo- 'cratie party and in the Republican P irty. rho vot1 lor il hc ""cl i knew, and ho also knew that thcTo were j equally as good men in either party ! who voted against iU Ho said that ho had been informed-that tickets had been printed and were in circulation, bearinir his name as a candidate for Congress from this District, and in tho most impressive manner asked that every Democrat who had any regard for the glory of tho State, the triumph of tho party or respect for him, do all in his power to prevent them from be ing used. He hoped that no such bal lot would be cast by any man, and he was well assured that none would bo by any real friend. Col. Waddell then spoke of the plan of tho Republican leaders to bull doze tho voters of Xorth Carolina by sending a lot ot deputy marshals into the differ ent voting precincts of tho doubtful dis tricts of tho State, which he denounced as a most flagrant assault upon our rishls as freemen, and should be resist ed to the death. He counselled no vio lation of tho law, no opposition to the legal requirements of properly consti tuted officials, but the right of franchise was a blessing conferred upon him by the MBill of Rights, and no man could with impunity molest him in its excr- Wo regret our inability to give his speech in full. lor it was a granda noble effort, and was. listened to with the most profound'attention and inter est thronghout, and at its conclusion round after round of hearty and uproari ous applause testified to the apprecia tion of the audience. ChIU were then mado for "Davis," "Ricaud." Oldham" avi others, but none responded save Mr. A. O. Ricaud. who made a brief addrcss.antl Mr.W.P. Oldhanu who depmlBctl Mr. Tho. W. Dockcry, the Republican candidate for Congrcssman-at-Largo in this State, i arrived here last evening aud spoke last night from tho head of the old market site. There were two processions, one Republican aud one "Liberal," there being one transparency, a band of music and abont twenty men in tho latter. As a display of weakness tho "Liberal" show last night was a decided success; At the stand Mr. Canaday spoke first, then Mr. E. H. King introduced Col. Dockcry, who spoke only about tea minutes, and then Judge Russell spoke and then Geo. Mabson spoke and thcu E. 11- King spoke and then J. C. Hill spoke and then somebody in the attenuated crowd spoke and said it was time to shut up and tho meeting stood adjourned sine die. The Southern Ore Company. The managers of this company have arrived, as well a3 tho metallurgist and assaycr, Mr. D. A. Row, of Europe. They are now busily engaged iu con structing their furnaces and buildings and .will be ready within a week to re ceive shipments, for which they agree to pay cash at remunerative prices. Thoy also buy mixed ores, containing various metals. Wc hope that mining operators will take advantago of tho excellent oppor tunity offered to find a ready market for refractory ores, and trust that this undertaking will receive encouragement by an abundant supply of ores. Tho gentlemen connected with the enter prise have, .we understand,' large mean3 and display great energy and mean bus iness. All enterprises of this nature aid in the development of tho mineral resources of the Southern States and wc hope that the railroad companies will also extend a helping hand by making low rates of freight and there by aid in the shipment of ore to this point. The works aro to bo erected at the foot of Ann street. South side. Last Itally ot the Campaign "turnout Democrats.- Gen. E. W. Moise, of S. C, and Jno. C.
